The Project

This personal project explores fungi’s role in sustainability while experimenting with interactive storytelling through technology. It was developed in response to a brief encouraging creative exploration over success, with the goal of learning.

I wanted to grow my coding skills in a creative context and to shift the way people see fungi - show how they can actually play a big role in helping the planet. When I discovered scrollytelling, I realized it was the perfect medium to combine interactive tech and engaging storytelling.

Research Question
How can scrollytelling be used to inform people about fungirs role in sustainability through creative learning techniques?

Development

Experiment 1: Animation Flow

Hypothesis: Users will intuitively understand how to navigate and trigger the animations.
Result: Mixed—many users needed more guidance.
Design Change: Added subtle cues and microinteractions to help users navigate the flow.

Experiment 2: Scroll Speed

Hypothesis: Allowing users to scroll faster gives them more control and improves engagement.
Result: Too-fast scrolling reduced information retention, too-slow scrolling caused distraction.
Design Change: Adjusted scroll speed and added pacing elements (e.g. anchor points and scroll locks) to balance control and readability.

Experiment 3: Text Display

Hypothesis: Creative text animations will keep attention without distracting from the content.
Result: Confirmed—users found it fun and engaging, with no major issues of distraction.
Design Choice: Kept animated text transitions consistent and subtle to maintain clarity.

Final Experiment

Hypothesis: Users will retain over 70% of the information immediately after experiencing the scrollytelling piece.
Result: Average recall was 75%, confirming the format's effectiveness in delivering memorable content.
